As Ostara / Spring Equinox / Easter is a time associated with fasting, I thought I’d post this piece which I posted on another Golden Dawn forum and was based on a juice fast I did some time ago (last summer I think, not on Easter as such) -
I am not a great fan of fasting, for two reasons – (1) To be honest, I find it boring and depressing as food is one of my greatest pleasures [in other words, perhaps I lack the discipline] and (2) I don’t really feel I need to as I have a very good, clean vegetarian diet (90% vegan these days). Nevertheless, I had one definite weakness in my diet – a tendency to drink too much caffeine - so I thought fasting might get rid of some of the toxic build up that would have possibly occured over the years and, anyway, I thought it would be interesting to do a three day fruit juice fast to see if I received any benefits from it or any sort of energy-boost. Of course, it also was on my mind that fasting might leave me open to an influx of the Divine which for me personally is symbolized by the image of Isis-Hathor. So I had read somewhere that a 3 day fruit juice -fast (drinking only fruit juice) is a good mini-fast giving good results. I made the decision to fast for 3 days on fruit juice as a form of physical and spiritual purification.
During the days of the fast. There was a bowl of dried figs in front of me, on the table in my living room (put there by my partner). Although in the past I had never bothered with them, being only on fruit juice for a few days made ANY solid food I saw look very tempting! So, for the last day of the fast I suddenly decided that that bowl of figs looked very appetizing. Anyway, when the fast ended, the figs were the first thing that I ate and they taste delicious.
Since then I have been a big fan of figs and I often take them on toast or bread in place of jam (I don’t consider most jams healthy being full of refined sugar – rather than just the natural fruit sugar).
Anyway, it was only whenI read this wonderful little article -
Some time later that I made the connection between the fig and the Goddess.
The fast was obviously successful. The Divine One had indeed descended! …and the fig was Her gift to me.
Everytime I have a fig now, I think of Hathor
